Christmas Pictures!

Finally getting some Christmas pics up.

Ty - NOT thrilled that his brother woke him up so early or that mom has a camera

Photobucket

But wait! Its a trike! Ok now I'm happy.

Photobucket

Woo hoo! A new helmet! (note - picture was taken AFTER the little drama queen collapsed on the floor in excitement).

Photobucket

Awww - all decked out. This will probably be the only picture of him I have in clean gear. Guess I'd better increase my accident insurance policy huh?

Photobucket

Oh great! A bow and arrow set so he can shoot his brother and daddy! Oops I mean shoot WITH his brother and daddy. What was I thinking? No worries - he's already managed to break it.

Photobucket

Look at the excitement! Who would have thought a 9 yr. old could get so excited over a touch and brush. lol

Photobucket

I hope everyone had a happy and safe Christmas.

All I want for Christmas..........................

We finally got our tree up. We decided this year to pull the big tree out. That was a task! We (I) had to rearrange the entire living room so that it would fit.

We'd like to give a special thanks to Val & Phyllis. If it wasn't for you we'd have no Christmas decorations.

The boys decorated the tree (notice all of the ornaments are clumped down low) and they are very excited. Here are a few short clips of them giving their Christmas list.

**I had issues uploading the videos so you'll have to click on the links below to view them**

Ty's first take

Notice that Chase has things written down so he won't forget anything?

Chase's Christmas Wishes

I had Ty sit down so I could get more information from him on what he wanted from Santa.

Ty's second take

Enjoy!

100th Anniversary of the Cherry, IL Mine Disaster

CHERRY — The gray sky reflected the mood of the hundreds and hundreds of those
who came to Cherry Saturday.

They came from all over the state and the country to remember the 259 men and boys who died 100 years ago in the mine-riddled land under Cherry in what has come to be known as the Cherry Mine Disaster. The tragic deaths, resulting from the fire or the dreaded “black damp,” a poisonous gas that burns in an atmosphere lacking sufficient oxygen, shook the country and resulted in stronger mine safety regulations and contributed to the Illinois Workmen’s Compensation Act.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, the village held a ceremony that included the unveiling and dedication of a new Miners Monument. After a procession to the monument by the Chicago Fire Department Color Guard, a welcome by Cherry Mayor Bob McCook, and an invocation by the Rev. Paul Meismer of Cherry’s Holy Trinity Catholic Church, members of the Cherry Booster Club unveiled the monument, which features the slag heaps of red ash, a black coal mine tipple, and the 259 names of the miners who died.

Also included in the ceremony were several union officials and local politicians. Tim Drea, secretary treasurer of the Illinois AFL-CIO, told the group that until the time of the Cherry Mine Disaster, the term “disaster” was used for any incident with five or more deaths, and Gary Butler of the United Mine Workers said the miners’ deaths will not be forgotten.

“The price paid here on Cherry Hill will not be paid in vain,” Butler said.

Rep. Debbie Halvorson (D-11th District), then spoke, first recounting the history of the tragedy and its aftermath.

“It’s a shame that it took a tragedy like this to bring real reform for American workers,” she said.

Halvorson also read her House Resolution 752 honoring the miners, which was unanimously passed by the House on Nov. 4.

Sen. Gary Dahl (R-Granville) praised Cherry for continuing to remain a vibrant community after the tragedy, and Rep. Frank Mautino said the names on the monument include the names of descendants who still live in the area. Mautino also read his Illinois House Resolution 691, which was adopted by representatives on Oct. 28.

Larry Spivak of the Illinois Labor History Society said few events in Illinois could be more tragic than the Cherry Mine disaster, and that it was important to always remember.

“I believe that we can become better as a people individually and collectively if we surmount the difficult task of taking stock, of thinking how we might have done things differently, and make use of every teachable moment,” he said. “When we do this, we can become more thoughtful, more helpful, more caring and wiser. This is how we change the world to make it a better place.”

After two songs by the Cherry Grade School students, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride read an anonymous poem that appeared in the Bureau County Record on Dec. 22, 1909. The poem is included in the new memorial.

‘Afterward-At-Cherry’
When the dead have all been recovered and silently laid away.
When men have returned to their labor, and the children have gone back to play.
When the last reporter has vanished and the soldiers, too, have gone.
When the long, long train of sleepers has crept away into the dawn.
When they awake from their nightmare of horror and realize all they have lost.
When they understand the full disaster, and all of its frightful costs.
Then will come days of anguish, and nights when hearts will break.
When grief-dimmed eyes are sleepless, and tired brains throb and ache.
Then they will need your pity, and the help your purse will permit,
For then they will suffer a thousand times more, than the men who died in the pit.

My Great Grandfather John Thomas Brown was one of 21 survivors that was trapped in the mine for 8 days. Our family visited the monumen this weekend and listened to the memorial. President Obama sent a letter, Illinois legislators signed proclamations and the Labor Unions were there. The monument if very nice. The bricks purchased by our families line the outside area (grey area). We had 3. We got to take a trolley onto the mine site - we were told was very rare. We viewed exhibits and I met a number of folks I had emailed. That was nice.
I would like to thank my mom and dad for this trip. It was not only a wonderful weekend to be with family but it was also nice to see where our family has come from.

Redfield Saddle Club High Point - 8 & Under

This past weekend the Redfield Saddle Club had their annual awards banquet. This is a time for memberst to gather and reflect on the year. This is also a time for the club to present awards.

Our family was in Cherry, IL for a family vacation so we were unable to attend. Chase was surprised last night with the news that he had been awarded the High Point trophy for the 8 & under age group.

As you can see by his face he was thrilled!

Along with his award he also recieved $25. I know what he'll be spending that on!

I'm hoping this award will give him a goal to work towards next year.

Hutcheson for City Council

Not me! Brandon! That’s right! (I know you are all shocked).

Brandon decided to run for City Council. I honestly couldn’t tell you what sparked this decision but it is one he made and last night I got word that he was voted in.

Look out De Soto!

Baby Dollz Bar 1994-2009

For those of you who know me, you know what an emotional post this is for me.

Tonight I received news that Tuff passed away earlier today. My understanding (from what I heard through all of the sobbing and tears) is that earlier today, Tuff started to colic, banimine was administered, and before the vet could get out she passed.

Tonight has been an emotional roller coaster for me (to say the least). Tuff meant a great deal to me. Those who know me best know why Tuff was where she was. I know she was taken care of well, but it still doesn't make losing her any easier.

Tuff taught me a lot & gave me two wonderful babies. She carried me through many show seasons and now her daughter is carrying my son on. Her legacy will live...............

You will be missed! :(

We're up and running!

After many nights of no sleep..........my website is up and running! I'll still be making modifications here and there but for now, it is informational and functional!

Please check it out and make sure to pass it on to your friends and family!

Just click on the picture below to visit:

Family Time

Brandon's grandmother and grandfather celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last weekend! One of the gifts to them was updated family pictures of the family. It had been over 5 years since we'd last updated our family photo so we were well overdue!

Enjoy! It could be another 5+ years before I get Brandon talked into doing another one!

Chase is getting so tall! He's a bean pole with legs that never end! I'm not really sure where those came from. Ty........Ty is still our little guy with the craziest hair you've ever seen. He's going to be a handful - strike that - he IS a handful, but we all love him.

I’m an Entrepreneur

Doesn’t that sound so much more exciting then just saying I decided to become a sole proprietor? I think it does.

I am now selling natural supplements for livestock and pets manufactured by Gomer’s Inc. I’ve been using the Karbo Combo on my horses with great success. After watching the success I’ve had and hearing about the success others have had (close friends) I decided this was a product I wanted to promote.

Feel free to go to their site and look around & feel free to pass it along if you think you might know someone who would benefit from any of these great products.

Gomer’s Inc.

Mom has decided to use the Karbo Essentials on her squirrels to see if it can help Squeaky the tiny squirrel that refuses to grow. I think I’m just as excited as she is to see if it works.

School Time!

Can you belive it? Chase started school last week! Seems like our summer just flew by!

Why do they always have to have such a goofy smile when you tell them to smile?

Fair 2009

This past weekend we were please to have Chase participate in the county fair. He entered two photos and his bottle calf Dozer. He received a blue ribbon on one photo and a red on another (being beat out by his cousin Shari).

This was the first year for us in the bottle calf division and we can say we still don’t understand how the judges made their decisions. Yes, mom, dad, grandma and grandpa were probably biased but we all thought Chase had one of the best looking and best trained calves for his group. He just didn’t seem to have the “cutest” answers. Live and learn right? Next year we’ll know to be “cute”.

Here are a few pictures from the day.

Can I go mom pleeeease?

Photobucket

Chase was happy and still wants to do a bottle calf next year. He’s also continuing on with his responsibility for Dozer which makes both is dad and I very proud.

Before we left for the day we let Chase enter the peddle pull. He pulled 41” which had been by far the farthest pull for the day. Unfortunately one other kid pulled 41 ½” feet & beat Chase out. He’s determined to practice for next year.

What’s Red & Blue?

The inside of our trailer! Why? Because MIL and Chase had a great show on Saturday! Chase started off with walk/trot. He looked great (yes I am biased)! He’s still having a hard time knowing what to do with his “free” hand but he kept it off of the reins so I was proud of him. He did a fabulous job and came out with a 1st place blue.

Next it was MIL’s turn. She looked great as well and had a nice ride. Sis was a bit fast for my liking but the judge must have liked her as she placed 2nd (1st place horse was very nice & would have been my choice as well).

Then MIL moved on to WP (Chase is still to young for that). I didn’t get to watch because I was in the class with her (on Abby lol) but they ended up winning the class so she must have had a nice ride. Abby didn’t do too badly. I figured at the beginning we’d be sitting in the middle of the ring before the class was over but the most she did was chomp at the bit. She got both leads well and while I had to push her to keep a trot she was more then happy to lope.

Next it was time for the games! Chase didn’t want to do poles because he always forgets the pattern. I told him to do them anyways and he did and won! He did the pattern perfectly and did most of it at a lope!

MIL and I took Abby in for shit and giggles and that little pony can turn! I ended up getting 5th on her which is sad because she wasn’t even trying (hmmmmm the wheels are turning – just kidding).

Next it was time for barrels. Chase got 2nd in this class but he did great! MIL and I didn’t place but we had a blast. Abby wasn’t as thrilled with it but it was good for her.

Here are a few pictures of “the man”. Doesn’t he look sharp?

Busy, Busy, Busy

I haven’t updated lately but lately it seems like we never get a chance to slow down.

Two weeks ago Ty was hospitalized for 3 days. He had a fever, he was having a difficult time breathing and he was very lethargic. Of course the day after they released him he was bouncing off of the walls. He did have one set back last Friday (high temps again) but for the most part he seems to be back to “normal”.

Luckily the week he was gone Chase was with his great grandparents so he was occupied. During his visit with Papa Don and Grandma Bea he made me this “beautiful” bird feeder out of their scrap pile and an entire roll of duct tape!

Photobucket

I placed it in my flower bed (behind the tall flowers) and the birds do enjoy it.

Photobucket

As you probably already know Papa Bob and Grandma Candy have a few “critters” at their house now. Ty’s favorites are Grandma Candy’s “monkeys”.

Photobucket

I have to say they are quite humorous to watch when they get to playing. This one is trying to learn how to sleep on the log. I’m sure he’d do better if the camera wasn’t flashing on him.

Photobucket

Then Papa Bob has his baby deer. He has 3 of them now and they range in sizes and personalities. The deer have been very good for Chase and his outlook on wildlife.

Photobucket

At the beginning of the month Brandon and Janet rode in the Van Meter Kid’s Day parade. They had a lot of fun (not sure who had more fun, Janet or Brandon).

The horse that Brandon is riding is 24 yrs. old.

Photobucket

Janet all decked out with Sis.

Photobucket

And of course we can’t forget Chase. He’s still enjoying Dozer.

Photobucket

Dozer says “feed me now!”

Photobucket

He will show at the fair on July 19th and I’m very excited for him. He has been very responsible for Dozer since he has gotten him.

Meet Dozer

Dozer (short for Bull Dozer) is Chase's 4-H project this year. Pappa Don was kind enough to let Chase use one of his bottle claves to show at the county fair.

Saturday we went and picked up the not so little guy.

Photobucket

He needs some lessons in leading.

Photobucket

But he already knows where to find his food.

Photobucket

I think everyone on the farm is enjoying him so far.

Iowa Deer Classic Results

Well they finally posted the results for the archery contest on-line so I thought I'd share.

Brandon got 22nd out of 105. He shot a 283 / 5 (not sure what that means) but I though he did well.

Chase got 17th out of 22. He shot a 196 / . I was very proud of him. He was one of the only (if not the only) kids shooting without a release and this was his first competition.

He wasn't very thrilled with his placing until I told him he beat dad.

All I want for Christmas..................

Is my two front teeth!

Unfortunately this song now rings true for Chase.

Last Sunday after returning from drill practice Chase and his cousins decided to play ball. Pappa Bob had taken away all of the bats so he decided to use an old banister railing instead. Of course it would have taken too much time for him to take off his glove so he propped the railing in the glove.

Hey batter, batter, batter…………swing! Photobucket

That’s when I got the call to come to the house. As Chase swung the banister it popped out of the glove and into his mouth. Needless to say I wasn’t a very sympathetic mother when I learned how this all happened.

Brady, Mason and I spent some time looking for his teeth. We found his baby tooth and part of his permanent tooth but not all of it as it had been broken in more then one piece.

Photobucket

The front tooth was a permanent tooth. The one next to it was a baby tooth.

We went to the dentist the following day and they put some paint on the tooth to keep the exposed nerve from bothering Chase until the swelling goes down. In about 3 weeks we go back to see if the tooth has grown out enough for them to try to put a cap on it.

Iowa Deer Classic

This past weekend was the Iowa Deer Classic. Brandon took his buck in for the “Big Buck” contest and both Brandon and Chase participated in an archery tournament on Sunday.

Photobucket
Brandon’s Buck

Brandon’s buck received a ribbon stating he was a true trophy buck. Brandon said this qualified him to be listed in the Pope & Young Record Book. I’m really not sure what all of that means but I’m sure if someone wants to know Brandon would be happy to explain it to them.

Photobucket
His Score Card

Photobucket
Here is a picture of Brandon’s buck amongst the competition

I learned that archery tournaments last longer then 15 minutes. I about died when Brandon said it would take nearly two hours. It was fun watching at first but quickly reminded me of watching paint dry. Chase tends to show off in public and not do as well as he does at home so I was very proud of him when he shot better at the tournament then he did at home.

Photobucket
Chase on the line

Photobucket

Photobucket
Brandon on the line

Unfortunately that kid draws kids that get him into trouble like a magnet. He somehow befriended a little boy during the shoot. This little boy decided to go up to the line with Chase and talk to him while he was shooting. He even went as far as patting Chase on the head while he shot. This happened during 3 rounds and those where the worst three rounds Chase had. I finally said something to Brandon who asked one of the officials to remove the boy from the line and after that Chase’s shooting went back up.

Photobucket
Ty and Grandma (Ty was about as bored as I was)

He shot a 196 out of 300 and Brandon shot a 285. I don’t think Brandon was too proud of that number as he says he normally shots around 295.

Photobucket
Chase smiling with his target (I told him if he smiled I’d buy him a four wheeler – that didn’t happened)

Photobucket
Ty trying to carry the bow cases so we could get out of there.

As soon as we know the results we’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Ty's Birthday

I’m not sure how I missed blogging about this but Ty had a wonderful party and he was surrounded by family & friends.

Photobucket

Aunt Heather made him the cutest tractor cake!

Photobucket

Time to blow out the candles!

Photobucket

What more could a birthday boy want? Why presents of course!

Photobucket

No birthday would be complete without presents.
